Empire of Silence Sun Eater Book 1 eBook Christopher Ruocchio

There are two types of Science Fiction stories; those that use the setting as a excuse for techno babble (that personally bores me) and those that use the setting to let the imagination run wild. This story is happily of the latter category and is really well done in terms of all the major check boxes for me: word building, plot, characters, prose, and pacing.

The comparisons to Name of the Wind and Dune are accurate, but are more of a homage in my opinion, because the author still does his own thing. I honestly can't come up with any complaints and will definitely be buying the next book in the series!

Empire of Silence Sun Eater Book 1 eBook Christopher Ruocchio Reviews

The writer is eloquent and the story is quite imaginative. Nonetheless, there are painful inconsistencies.
1. The protagonist is overly stupid. As opposed to a 20 something with the best education available, in addition to 1st tier training in diplomacy, politics and personal combat, he comes across as a 13 year old.
2. The political basis of the story's 'universe' is not credible. An autocracy over such a vast area could not be implemented, let alone survive for any period of time. The very creation of such a regime is directly contrary to the immense diaspora required to create such an imperium in the first place. Combine that with the time lag in travel between points in the Imperium renders the concept non-credible.
3. Dialogue between the characters is often stilted and unnatural. Sometimes it's poignant; often, however, it feels contrived.
I commend the author for the attempt and understand that the first attempt at writing an ambitious and lengthy story will not be perfect - early Larry Niven stories, for instance, were rather poor, especially compared to his later work in the 70's and 80's.
Not so sure I'd pick up the second installment to this. There's much the author needs to do to solidify the story.
EMPIRE OF SILENCE is a science fiction epic in the true sense of the word when the cosmos erupts into chaos because of Volkswanderung, the great migration of peoples, what sacrifices must a people’s heroes make to save it, and what new reality will emerge from the ruins?

In this book, the hero is Hadrian Marlowe, at odds with his father because of his conscience and his father’s iron fist. Ironically, from the very beginning, the book warns us that it is Hadrian’s conscience that will lead him to commit genocide and to destroy a very star. The upheaval in the cosmos is driven by the alien Cielcin, pale anthropophagous demons from the void, who have been at war with the Empire for many decades.

EMPIRE OF SILENCE is written as a memoir, in which the (much) older and supposedly dead Hadrian tells us of the first stages of his eventually murderous and at the same time salvific career. We see his unreflective brutish brother, his cruel father, and his artist mother whose apparent lack of connection masks a will to save her son. Hadrian escapes from priesthood life planned for him by his father, is betrayed, suffers terrible losses . . . and undertakes the first of his mighty deeds.

Thematically weighty, bursting with action, knowing in its allusions, and brimming with careful wisdom, EMPIRE OF SILENCE is a dazzling space opera debut.
Technically, I finished this yesterday, but I've been spending some time really letting it marinated in my mind for a bit. It seems only right as the whole thing is a guy writing down his memories of his life.

First, I'll say that while I didn't need it, Ruocchio includes a glossary in the back of the book in case the vocabulary used isn't obvious to the reader. As a digital reader, I didn't even think to check, so I didn't find out until I was done reading. Did that maybe help immerse me into universe? Maybe. You decide for yourself which you think is best for you.

Please don't read the comments about how this is "like Name of the Wind in Space" and expect a rehash of Name of the Wind. The similarities are simply that they are both books of older men telling stories of their struggles in their youth and both are excellent reads. And that's it, really. It should be enough to have those two similarities, but if you need Hadrian to be another Kvothe then you'll be fairly disappointed.

Hadrian's recollections of his early years ring true to this old man writing this review who also thinks back to his youth and accepts that the mistakes made sense at that time. And like a fair storyteller, sometimes he has to admit he might be an unreliable narrator (as does the scribe that signs off at the end about translating the official writing).

The worlds we're introduced to are both alien and familiar enough to feel surreal and real in equal measure. Characters behave in realistic ways and if someone's motivation seems odd at first, give it a minute. Things almost always make sense in the end. The technology never feels like a McGuffin or Deus Ex Machina. Rules are explained early and so far as I can tell were always followed. Oh, we learned new tech or a bit more about things as we progress through the story, but that was natural and never felt like Ruocchio was writing himself out of a corner.

So, if you like coming-of-age, political intrigue, space opera, action, or adventure...consider this one. I think you'll like it.
