I listened to this twice before reviewing. As with any Maberry novel you are in it for the long haul with a great payoff. I have read several of his books and always keep coming back for more.
There is no way I can give a character break down but the most notable ones are Dez(Des), Billy Trout, Goat, Homer Gibbon, Lee Hartnip, and a mad scientist to round it off.
With the zombie genre being saturated into the mainstream by all means available. I am grateful when authors take the time to flesh out characters in novels for readers that still enjoy books as a way to feed their zombie addiction. Most nights I listened to this with my eyes closed and pictured the characters struggling with their situation and wondering, “What the hell would I do.”
Kudos to narrator William Dufris. I am a fairly new audio book fan and I have only heard female narrators of high quality. I will be looking for more of his narration in the future.

Dead of Night A Zombie Novel Dead of Night Series Jonathan Maberry 9780312552190 Books Reviews
If Jonathan Maberry was a freakshow entertainer, he'd be juggling eight snapping zombie heads while cross-stepping up a series of razor-sharp swords, dodging a blind knife thrower. At least that's the impression you get of his talent when reading "Dead of Night." Maberry carefully weaves together a multitude of plots and subplots to create an amazingly refreshing zombie apocalyse, complete with walking dead displaying a sense of consciousness. It's fascinating to catch a glipse of what a zombie is thinking in the shuffling, moaning, quest for living flesh! To learn how our government is involved and then reacts to this disaster in a small Pennsylvania town is almost more chilling than the zombie outbreak itself. Heroes Dez and JT, two local cops forced to face the unbelievable fact that their friends and co-workers are quickly changing into walking nightmares bonds them to readers quickly. That the horror only deepens and becomes even more incredible takes readers down a road rarely, if ever imagined, but before the novel is over, characters and readers alike are left gasping from both the experiences and the truth. But Maberry isn't satisfied to end there. Just when it appears he's woven together one of the most suspenseful novels I've read, a final knife flies from that blind knife thrower of the freakshow. Hearts race once again, but this time, the knife stops in mid-air and we're left with the knowledge that the world doesn't end with a bang, but a bite, a single bite we never see coming.
A new take on what it means to be a zombie. I love Maberry's books, including the Rot & Ruin series. This book (and the next two in this series) takes place before the events of that series and shows how that zombie apocalypse began. A scientist creates a formula that mimics death; leaves the mind intact with no ability to control the body. The idea is to inject a serial killer with the formula at his execution. Once the killer is buried, his mind would wake up and he would feel all the pain of decomposition - an extreme torture. Of course, things don't go as planned and the world gradually goes to hell.
In the end, the question is this
Would you destroy an entire town of innocent people to prevent the end of the world?
First I will say, I have read other books from this author and have loved them. This one was a little hard for me to get into. I loved Fox, she surprised me quite a bit. By the end of the book I was rooting for her! I didn't like that the book so long to get to the point, but once there it was amazing! This book really makes you think that if there was ever an apocalypse, what would you do? How would you cope with killing your family or friends? How would you cope with people losing their humanity? Enjoyed the last part of the book immensely, but the first part was too long for me. This was the only reason why I have it a three. Not the same for everyone though.
About thirty pages into the book, I found myself on already ordering the second book to the series. Johnathan Maberry has quickly become one of my favorite authors, especially when it comes to zombie tales. He take on a zombie apocalypse is genius and so very different from what others have imagined. I won't give any secrets away, just suffice it to say that if you love zombies, pick up this book. The characters are all flawed but so very loveable. Even the worst of the worst, the protagonist if you will, will easily charm you with her biting words and fierce loyalty to her townspeople. And his writing style is so friendly and engaging, but extremely intelligent as well. It's like you've got your oldest college buddy sitting next to you in a bar, throwing his hands around animatedly, telling you this amazing story.
Also, FYI, if you know the horror author Kealean Patrick Burke, you'll be delighted to find he makes a cameo in this work of fiction.
