At 155 pages this book is not quite a novel, but the author used every single page to her advantage. The characters were surprisingly well developed in the short time you are shown them, and the ones meant to be likable are likable while those you're meant to detest are certainly detestable. I just finished another book in the same genre, but it was much longer and had a similar plot as far as the misunderstandings go. While I did enjoy the book immensely, I spent much of it frustrated and heartbroken for the characters, so the quicker pace and resolution of this story was exactly what I needed! A very well done story and I can't wait to read the author's other works.
S. G. Rogers writes sweet clean romance books. All of the books I have read have very well written characters. There are twists and turns to w plot and there are usually the characters you love to hate. Ruse & Romance follows true of the same great writing.
I liked this story set in my favorite time period. I liked Philip and Kitty, as well as some of the secondary characters. My favorite scene was when everyone from Kitty's grandmother to her sister was trying to blame themselves for people finding out that Philip and Kitty's engagement wasn't real. Some scenes and dialogue in the book made me laugh out loud--what a fun read!

HEA, but first in the Beaucroft Girls series. This one is a standalone. The last 12% of this one is an excerpt from the next book in the series. This is my fourth Suzanne G Rogers book and I'm very pleased. I read three of her Regencies and I'm about to download more. Highly recommend!
Ruse & Romance by S.G. Rogers. pp. 154. 2014. $.99 edition. Miss Kitty Beaucroft refuses Lord Gryphon's proposal, her fifth in less than two years. She is seeking a man of honor who she can respect and love, most impractical according to the social mores of her day and very unreasonable to the great ire of her father. Lord Gryphon proves to be an exceedingly proud and vengeful man, sets out to humiliate and ruin Kitty in return for embarrassing him. Lord Phillip Butler, the second son of Marques Moregate, desires to purchase some land from the future estate of his brother, Lord Elbourn (Augustus), and Moregate reluctantly agrees with one stipulation. Phillip must seek a suitable bride. He, however does not wish to marry a debutant desperate enough to accept marriage to a second son with poor prospects, which is why he wishes to purchase and renovate the property. This couple, each of whom who has been maligned for romantic aspirations, meet accidentally at a ball. He comes to her rescue when Gryphon escorts Kitty into the garden (with her father's supposed permission) to attack her. Phillip comes to her rescue and afterwards Gryphon and two sidekicks ambush him. Gryphon claims Phillip started the brawl and both he and Kitty are smeared in the gossip sheets. The two families gather to come up with a plan. What solution can be found to redeem their reputations and allow for just recompense to Gryphon and his friends? The author weaves social themes typically addressed in romantic novels of this time period, particularly the difficulties of heiresses and second sons in finding suitable mates, and issues caused by gossip and scandal especially for young unmarried females of higher social status. Roger's characters are likeable and the story flows well. The protagonists could have had an additional wart or two for realism, but they make for a very empathetic though exceptional couple. This is a light sweet, romance and very appealing for fans of the genre whatever their age.
It should be titled "My Dear Lord Phillips". I can see this book make for a movie. It reminds me with movies like Love Actually, Bridget Jones', My Best Friend's Wedding, is sweet and yet complicated, funny and yet very touching, it has all elements even little conversations of passing characters are delightful, witty and refreshingly funny. Put a smile on my face from the beginning to the end.

The only cons is just too short (I prefer my books over 300 kindle pages). Clean story, your heart will warm instantly. Def. will add SGR on my author to read list.

Ruse & Romance (The Beaucroft Girls Book 1) by skilled writer, Suzanne G. Rogers, is a sweet and clean stand alone Regency romance. I liked both Kitty and Phillip, but I must admit to finding most of the supporting characters a bit shallow and unlikable.
However, the duel POV's, the dialogue and the subtle humor kept this from being an annoying read. Instead, it was a quick and enjoyable story, but with a rushed HEA.
